Feeling the crispy autumn wind, the Eagles competed against 16 other teams at regionals in Willow Metro Park on Oct. 26.
Overall, the boys team placed second. The top five finishers were: senior Austin Sulier, Parker Campbell, freshman Caleb Healey, Weston Albright and David Mills.
The girls’ team fought hard and had two overall personal bests, with the top five finishers being senior Elizabeth Lambert, senior Bailey Meiring, Kate Otting, Lexi Colbourn and freshman Jaelynn Horton.
The boys had two individual qualifiers for states – Sulier and Campbell.
On the girls team, Lambert was an individual state qualifier.
The seniors expressed their feelings about their last regional meet as well as some hopes and words for their team in the future.
“Finishing my last regional meet is incredibly heartbreaking because it’s my last time running that course and I would miss the people that I run with,” Lambert said. “We’ve all worked together as a team to get to where we are today. I hope they continue to work together and accomplish great things as a team. I believe in their potential, so I hope for the best for them.”
Sulier said that he feels relieved about finishing strong at the regional meet.
“I wouldn’t have to hold the burden and pressure of running well and advancing to states, because I made it there for four years now,” he said. “I hope the team knows that though you may not like the running course, still leave your everything out there. We’re running against similar groups of people, so make friendly enemies and go after them.”
“I think it’s disappointing that this is my last meet. I hope the team keeps working hard and continues on with our glory,” said Meiring.
Campbell said, “It felt good for my last regional meet. I hope my team keeps being successful while always having fun with each other.”
The other team members commented on their performances and their hopes for the future.
Horton said that she’s grateful for her coach’s support and is looking forward to reuniting with her team again in future seasons.
Freshman Weston Albright said he thinks he had a pretty good season.
“I’m on varsity for every meet and provided my team with a lot of help. I’m looking forward to achieving new best times. I’m also looking forward to being the top three scorers on my team.”
“I think it’s the best cross country season I’ve had. The fact that I get to keep going is just amazing. I’m really looking forward to new personal bests and challenging myself,” Sophomore David Mills.
Junior Jackson Carner was happy about his overall performance as well as the accomplishments of the team.
“I’m really looking forward to being one of the best runners on the team as well as being a captain and leading my team to greater success.”
The next cross country meet is the state meet on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Michigan International Speedway.
