Under the Friday night lights, our Erie Mason Eagles suffered a hard loss against the Whiteford Bobcats. The first half ended with the Bobcats up 51 to 0. The Eagles came back into the second half with a little more ferocity, marking a notable pass from Bowie Jacobs to Phoenix Stefko for a touchdown in the 4th quarter. The two-point conversion was also successful for the Eagles.
With a final score of 65-8, the Erie Mason football team learned some hard lessons from that night.
When asked what Mason football needs to work on to beat Whiteford in the future, Junior Quarterback Bowie Jacobs said: “...I believe we need to get stronger this offseason and develop as a team.” Mason still has three more season games left to improve.
Sophomore Lucas Neely said he hopes to win out in the end: “[We hope] to win out and even up the TCC. [We need to] play together as a team as opposed to bringing our teammates down.”
Although there were some negatives this Friday, there were also a lot of positives with a spotlight on senior Phoenix Stefko. Stefko said he has heartfelt hopes for the rest of his final season of football. “[I hope] to try my absolute best on every play no matter what the outcome may be. I wish to also put my team in the best position to succeed in our final few games,” he said.
When asked what his overall opinion on the Whiteford game, Coach Steven Bowers remarked, “We were outplayed in all aspects of the game Friday night. We made too many mistakes early in the game with penalties, turnovers, and breakdowns in special teams that gave Whiteford a huge early lead. We did some positive things later in the game and will work to build on those, learn from our mistakes, and get better moving into the last three weeks of our season.”
Erie Mason football’s next game is away versus Summerfield on Friday, Oct. 11 starting at 7 p.m.

This Friday marked the end of Erie Mason’s 2024 football season. The team suffered a difficult loss to Owosso, with the final score 56-6. However, the night was still a celebration of the tough work of the class of 2025 seniors on the football team including Phoenix Stefko, Logan Goodin, Kaleb Pope, Reese Turner, Micheal Narew, Landen Nastale, and Elijah Gomez. Mason will end the season with a record of 1-8
Offensively, Goodin was a star. He scored Mason’s only touchdown of the night for 70 yards and reached a career achievement of 1000+ yards. Phoenix Stefko had three carries for three yards and caught three passes for 49 yards.
On the defensive side, Pope had a sack for negative eight yards and a total of seven tackles. Sophomore Leroy Cuykendall had five tackles and Stefko had nine.
Many great memories are produced on the football field that will stick with players for a lifetime. Stefko said his football career’s highlight memories which include a Jefferson win and even the joy of simply playing.
“It was playing the Jefferson Bears and beating them my Junior year. However, after tonight, I have to say it's playing on the field with my brothers for the last time. It’s an unreal feeling that I can’t describe,” Stefko said.
Although it was some player’s last night playing football here in the Eagle’s Nest, there are still high hopes from underclassmen for their future senior seasons. Junior Bowie Jacobs said this about his goals for his senior year “I hope to win a lot of our games [next year], continue to play quarterback, and throw for 1,000+ yards”
Junior Colin Koehl said beating the Flint Elite was his favorite football memory this year with the 2025 seniors. The Eagles won that game, the first of the season.
In a final remark about the 2024 season, Coach Steve Bowers said the season was tough, finishing with just 1 win.
“We battled injuries all season long and called upon a lot of younger players to step up and play,” Bowers said. “Despite our struggles, we had some good leadership and tremendous play from our seniors. Logan Goodin finished with over 1,000 yards rushing—this first time anyone has done this since 2020. Logan, along with Phoenix Stefko, provided some hard hits on defense and finished as our top two tacklers. With 26 returning players for next season, we hope to build during the off season on the varsity experience they got this year and look forward to a new challenge as we enter the Toledo Area Athletic Conference in 2025.”
